Dionysus - The God of the grape-harvest, wine, fertility, orchards and festivals. It was believed that he desired a young girl called Amethyst, and pursued her vehemently. She refused his advances, which sent him into an uncontrollable rage. Fearing for her life she prayed to the goddess Artemis for protection. She turened her into a pure Quartz gemstone.
Dionysus realized what had happened and stayed by the gemstones side, filled with remorse and sadness. One day he spilled wine over her clear quartz body, while moaning, and the wine turned her colour to purple. This is said to be the reason for the iconic purple colour of an amethyst.
